O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. Her performance on the show impressed panel of judges and she was voted into an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was praised highly by the jury. She suffered massive losses during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed on the third row, and then bottom two. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged fans to vote for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were consistently good, that he never fell into the top 3. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it to the final two in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted shortly after her win from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
